Good to Grill

by tmartin on July 22, 2011

I learned a lesson today: watch your grill.

Simple preparations with fresh food can’t be beat. And what says summer better than veggies on the grill?

Burgers and steaks get all the press when it comes to grilling time – but I’ll take a perfect grilled beet quarter or a sweet grilled cauliflower slab or finger-lickin’ grilled green bean any day!

We had in our market basket this week:

  • Beets
  • Carrots
  • Cauliflower
  • Green beans
  • Little new potatoes of many colors

I rolled ‘em in some good quality olive oil, sprinkled ‘em with sal de mer, and we were good to go.

Except … I definitely failed the grill-gal test. I threw these savory babies on and instead of standing there, watching, flipping, giving a running commentary I, uhm, went inside and washed the dishes.

Mistake.

You gotta’ watch the grill. The way those 1950s dads do in black and white old TV shows, wearing their goofy aprons and wielding oversized mitts and spatulas and long forks.

Well, ok, you probably don’t need the apron. And a pair of tongs handles cauliflower better than flippers and stabbers. But the point is this: watch the grill. Flip the veggies. Treat them with as much awe and respect as TV-Dad treats that burger and steak.

Throw away that idea that veggies should be steamed or boiled! It’s summer. And everything is good to grill. Just don’t forget to watch it!
